Washington Humane Society needs you to help save more lives than ever!

WHS is one of 49 shelters nationwide taking part in a friendly competition focused on increasing adoptions. As part of the “Save More Lives: ASPCA $100K Challenge”, the shelter who adopts the most animals during the months of August, September and October this year over their adoption numbers from those months last year, will win the grand prize of $100,000. Winning the grand prize would be amazing; however, the most important outcome of the Challenge is finding more homes for more of DC’s animals than ever before.

Stand Up Straight!

Poor posture leads to a drop in energy, affects your mood, and contributes to chronic back and neck pains.  Slouching can make you look and feel older than you are.  Additionally, slouching decreases your oxygen intake: when you compress the diaphragm and ribs, full respiration cannot take place and the blood flow to your brain and extremities is slowed.  A remedy for poor posture is to pull your chin inward and pretend there is a string pulling straight upward from the top of your head.  I like to alternate my office chair with a swiss ball which will force you to hold yourself upright and in turn will assist in straightening your spine reflexively.  So straighten up.  Own it.

Bend, Don't Break

Bamboo is prized in Asia not only for the usefulness of its sprouts as food, its inner stem as medicine, and its stalk as constructive material, but also for its cultural significance as a symbol for flexibility. The supple plant is able to survive even the most devastating storms. Our lives, too, are filled with unexpected happenings, and those who are successful at adapting to change have better health and more fulfilling lives. Possessing flexibility as a personality trait can assist greatly in the recovery from illness; emotional and physical. Try not to become overly attached to a specific outcome: stay on the course you have charted for your life, but understand that when barriers present themselves you'll sometimes have to take a detour in order to get back on track. Practice stretching, yoga, tai chi: being physically flexible can encourage the same trait in your personality.

The Addiction Of Food

The word "addiction" derives from the Latin adducere, meaning to lead toward.  When you are addicted, whether it is to a food or a type of situation (or for that matter, to another person or type of relationship), it means you are led toward that food, situation, person, or relationship.  Compulsively led.  Reactively led.

So, if you are being led -- who or what does the leading?

You do.

There are no addictive foods -- only addictive behavior patterns.

Yes, you may be entrained by a situation or a food.  But don't forget the dynamics of entrainment:

The lesser is to the greater as the greater is to the whole.

Eat Your Heart Out, America

Overeating is one of the worst forms of stress on your heart.  When you overeat, you tax every system of your body and increase the burden on your cardiovascular system.  But most important, when the stomach distends from excessive food volume it compresses the aorta and the arteries around the upper abdomen and pushes up against the diaphragm.  This restricts both lung and heart movement, potentially leading to serious heart disease.  Be good-hearted and eat moderately.  Take some breaths between bites.  Eat a little slower and enjoy the moment.

The Dogma Of Diet

My experience with natural food diets has shown there are two primary reasons people have for choosing one of the many types available.
