This press release comes to us from Neville Waters, Public Information Officer:

(Washington, DC) – The D.C. Department of Employment Services (DOES) is pleased to announce that Ashley Padgett received the award as the “Highest in 11th Grade” in the National Technical Association’s Math Contest. World renowned astrophysicist/inventor/mentor Dr. George Carruthers holds this yearly contest to encourage youths to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers by giving them personal face-time with top scientists, engineers and mathematicians.

Ashley attends School Without Walls and is enrolled in the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Institute (MYLI). She wants to pursue further studies in astrophysics and astrobiology. “We are extremely proud of Ashley and delighted that she continues to exemplify the outstanding characteristics of the MYLI participants,” Lisa M. Mallory, Interim Director of DOES said. “We are particularly delighted to support the accomplishments of a female student interested in STEM career opportunities.”

The National Technical Association (NTA) was founded and incorporated in 1926 by Charles S. Duke, who was the first African American to receive an engineering degree from Harvard University. NTA members have a deep tradition of achievements in the areas of education, engineering, research, science and technology. In addition to the Mathematics Contest for local area middle school and high school students, NTA supports other educational activities such as science fairs, special events and a quarterly newsletter.

The Mayor’s Youth Leadership Institute (MYLI) is a four-level year round leadership training and development program for young people in the District of Columbia, ages 14-19. The MYLI training model emphasizes practical hands-on experience and a holistic approach to developing leaders of the 21st century. MYLI is offered through the Department of Employment Services’ Office of Youth Programs.
