With Some Businesses Down, Tackle Box in Georgetown Continues To Grow

With Some Businesses Down, Tackle Box in Georgetown Continues To Grow

While many financial analysts are saying that the economy is on the way up, residue of the recession is still reflected all over Washington…even in Georgetown.

On the neighborhood’s posh M Street strip, sprinkled here and there between high-end boutiques and Zagat-rated restaurants, are the unfamiliar sights of boarded-up storefronts.

The past few years have been an adjustment period for many Georgetown businesses, realizing that in hard times members of society often abandon what they want to give themselves the ability to afford what they need.  Some shops in the Georgetown community have fallen victim to this shift; others have managed to stay above water.  And then there’s Jonathan Umble and his fish shack Tackle Box---who are expanding.

ACKC: Your Valentine's Day Sweet Spot

Ivana Vukolic has only been working at ACKC, Artfully Chocolate Kingsbury Confections, for 3 months, but she knows that, “It is always crazy for Valentine’s Day, especially the day before because they (men) always wait until the last minute,” she chuckled.

ACKC is the perfect spot to pick up some sweet treats for that special someone. You can pick out what truffles you would like, and which size box. They also have a special Valentine’s Day box pictured below. Vukolic’s favorite truffles are the Chipotle Cinnamon and the Lavender Pistachio.

Best Quirky Food Spot in D.C.: Fast Gourmet

Best Quirky Food Spot in D.C.: Fast Gourmet

It was a little over a month ago that I was first exposed to Fast Gourmet.  I saw a reader's note on Prince of Petworth's blog about a gourmet sandwich shop hidden inside of a "sketchy gas station" at the corners of 14th and W Streets in Northwest.

I was intrigued, but not yet convinced enough to try it out.  I mean, come on, good food in a gas station?  That's an oxymoron.  I needed more evidence.  So I went on Yelp to read more customer reviews, and what I saw...was astonishing.

Each review was more positive than last.  Each described how bizarre the location was, but also, how delicious the food was.

Coming Soon Around Farragut Square...

Coming Soon Around Farragut Square...

Le Pain Quotidien and yet another Frozen Yo will be opening doors in Downtown D.C. around Farragut Square in the near future.  The new outlet for LPQ will be it's fifth in the District, joining locations in Dupont Circle, Georgetown, Capitol Hill, and Spring Valley.  The bakery should do quite well in the business district.

Frozen Yo seems to be taking D.C. one yogurt shop at a time.  They already had locations in Friendship Heights, Metro Center, and Columbia Heights before recently opening doors to a new spot directly across from the National Zoo.  In addition to this fifth storefront, Frozen Yo also plans on opening at 1900 M Street in NW.
