Councilmember Cheh Blasts Congressional Interference with District’s Personnel Policies

From Kiara Pesante:

Councilmember Mary M. Cheh issued the following statement on the actions of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform:

“I stand with Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton in expressing my indignation with Congressional meddling in District affairs. This coming Thursday, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform plans to consider a redundant bill that would essentially function in the same manner as B19-0476, the Government of the District of Columbia Comprehensive Merit Personnel Amendment Act of 2011, which I introduced this session.

“The investigation into District hiring practices, launched by Rep. Issa earlier this year, was unnecessary. The Congressional Committeepursued its investigation despite the three separate, ongoing local investigations by a special committee of the D.C. Council, the D.C. Office of Campaign Finance, and the U.S. Attorney’s office. Indeed, the Congressional Committee’s findings match the conclusions we reached two months ago. It now appears that this Congressional Committee has come up with a piece of legislation to simply justify its unnecessary investigation – a deep offense to the people of the District of Columbia.

“What’s more, the bill being offered by Rep. Issa addresses but one of the problems that we identified.  My bill, on the other hand, takes a comprehensive approach to tackling the many issues we unearthed.  These are serious problems and they must be addressed, but it is insulting for Congress to continue to inject itself where it is not needed. The District and its residents are entitled to Home Rule.

“Tomorrow I plan to introduce an emergency resolution opposing Congressional interference. I hope my colleagues will join me in this important statement on local autonomy.”
