DPW to Collect Residential Trash/Recycling Starting at 6 AM, Tues. and Wed., July 17 and 18

The DC Department of Public Works announced today that its trash and recycling crews will begin their collections an hour earlier, at 6 am, Tuesday, July 17 and Wednesday, July 18, due to predicted 90° and above temperatures and the effect of the 90° plus heat index.  Residents may put their trash and recyclables out for pick-up starting at 6:30 pm on the day before their collections to make sure these materials are collected.  Trash and recycling containers should be removed from public space by 8 pm on the collection day.

Foster Monday: Pagent

Foster Monday: Pagent

This week we get to know Pagent! Pagent has come out of her shell under the foster care of WHS volunteer Kirsten Stade and family. Help us find Pagent a great forever home this week!

Meet Pagent, a sweet, silly, lovable little pup who loves to cuddle, play with other dogs or by herself, and go for hikes and swims. When Pagent first came to the adoption center, she was so shy she barely wanted to be handled. We don't know why she was so timid, but we do know that once she came into foster care, she came out of her shell with breakneck speed. Though she still is a tad cautious with new people and not a big fan of loud noises, she is overall just a typical happy puppy—running around with her canine "brothers," following her foster people around the house, welcoming of affection and play time. True to her lab roots, she loves to play in the water. She already shows promise as a swimmer, and even enjoys kayaking!

For Lennox Barnes

By Lisa LaFontaine, President and CEO, Washington Humane Society

Lennox Barnes’s life has come to a sad and bitter end. His story is heartbreaking and infuriating, with one part incomprehensible bureaucratic righteousness and three parts love, humanity and the shared will for profound change.

For those who haven’t heard, the details of his short life are achingly tragic. In May 2010, Lennox Barnes was taken from his home in Belfast, Northern Ireland. All indications are that he was a model citizen – he had no known history of bad behavior, and no aggressive or violent actions in his past.

Free Slurpees Today At 7-Eleven!

Free Slurpees Today At 7-Eleven!

It's time to talk about my dear friend Terry again, which, as you know, means that a free food or drink alert is most certainly in order.

Terry is a real stand-up guy who absolutely loves free giveaways.  This past weekend, Terry officiated a wedding for his college roommate, a huge feat and a fantastic honorary deed for the bearded Bostonian.  While the joy of proclaiming his good friends husband and wife was overwhelming emotionally for Terrence, my guess is he will get more excited to know that today, July 11, is Free Slurpee Day at 7-Eleven.

Yes Terry, and others who are like Terry and love giveaways, you heard that right: Free slurpees today.

Easing Transition

City Duck Departs DC for Southern Living

City Duck Departs DC for Southern Living

By Diana Foley, WHS Volunteer

Early one Friday morning in June, Donnie the Pekin duck was preparing to fly south—via US Airways. Tucked inside a soft-sided pet carrier, we made our way through the airport, keeping our fingers crossed that Donnie would make it through check-in and security without any trouble. We had called the airline ahead of time to confirm that Donnie would be allowed in the cabin, but knowing that ducks probably aren’t an everyday sight for travelers and airline staff, we proceeded with caution.
