RFK Journalism Awards

This event comes to us from Josh Karlen:

WASHINGTON (May 12, 2011) -- WHAT: The Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights’ annual Book and Journalism Awards ceremony

WHEN & WHERE: Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at 6:00 PM at The United States Institute of Peace, 2301 Constitution Avenue, NW, Washington, DC.

ABOUT THE EVENT:  Each year, the RFK Center holds its Book and Journalism Awards to honor those whose work reflects Robert Kennedy’s concern for the oppressed; his commitment to justice, democracy and human rights; and his belief in the power of individuals to effect social change.

Author Michael Lewis will receive the 31st annual RFK Book Award for “The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine” (W. W. Norton & Company), in which Lewis profiles a number of investors who bet against the booming subprime bond market, presenting a multi-faceted tale of how greed and systemic failures of the regulatory system caused an implosion of financial markets.

The ceremony will also feature the announcement of the Grand Prize winner of the 2011 RFK Journalism Awards.  Honorees range from legendary newsman Dan Rather and “Sopranos” star James Gandolfini to exceptional college and high school journalism students.  In addition, the winner of the Robert F. Kennedy Europe High School Journalism Award  will be honored.
