Respect DC Rally- Wednesday, June 22

This notice comes to us from Respect DC:

For the past six months, more than 40 neighborhood organizations, workers’ advocates, ANC officials, community leaders and clergy have worked together to craft an Enforceable Community Benefits Agreement ensuring that living standards and the quality of life for DC workers and residents would improve if Walmart opens four stores in the District of Columbia. Mayor Vincent Gray says he also wants a community benefits agreement with Walmart, but his negotiations with the company have not yet included community representatives.

That’s why the Living Wages, Healthy Communities Coalition will hold a rally to demand respect and their rightful seat at the table in negotiations with Walmart:

 Wednesday, June 22, at 2:00 p.m.

 Freedom Plaza, Pennsylvania Ave., across from the John Wilson Building.

At a table with an empty seat reflecting the lack of community input so far, Coalition leaders will insist that the Enforceable Community Benefits Agreement they have crafted be part of any negotiations between Walmart and city officials.

“Walmart’s record shows it rarely keeps the promises it makes to communities,” said Marina Streznewski, coordinator of the DC Jobs Council and a leader of the Living Wages, Healthy Communities Coalition. “If we’re not at the table to demand enforceability, any agreement isn’t likely to be worth much.

“We have sent Mayor Gray an invitation to join us on June 22 and show his support for community participation in this process,” Streznewski said. “Whether or not he attends, we will be delivering our message to him that the community should be a part of community benefits discussions. Our city deserves transparency and open, honest negotiations.”
