Ninth Annual AVON Walk For Breast Cancer Kicks Off In D.C. On April 30

This story comes to us from Gloria Quinn:

On Saturday, April 30, participants will begin the first day of the ninth annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Washington, D.C. The Avon Walk is a non-competitive fundraising event where participants can walk a marathon (26.2 miles) or a marathon and a half (39.3 miles) over the span of a weekend. The Avon Foundation for Women will award funds raised to local and regional breast cancer organizations to advance access to care and fund breast cancer research.

After completing the first leg of their journey through Washington, D.C. on Saturday, April 30, walkers and crew will camp out at the “Wellness Village” at Meadowbrook Park in Chevy Chase, MD, equipped with two-person tents, hot meals, showers, yoga, medical services and entertainment. Participants will complete the Avon Walk on Sunday, May 1 with a celebratory Closing Ceremony at the Washington Monument Grounds attended by thousands of family and friends, during which the Avon Foundation will announce initial local funding grants.

A new diagnosis of breast cancer occurs every three minutes. The 2011 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Washington, D.C. – the second of nine Walks in the 2011 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer series – brings together thousands of women and men to raise funds and awareness that will help save lives. The Avon Foundation for Women awards the funds raised to local, regional and national breast cancer organizations to support breast cancer awareness and education, screening and diagnosis, access to treatment, support services, and scientific research.

The Avon Foundation has awarded nearly $59 million to organizations and institutions in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., alone. Since its launch in 2003, the Walk for Breast Cancer series has raised more than $380 million through the dedication of more than 142,000 participating women and men from across the country. The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer series is the largest fund-raising event for the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade. Avon breast cancer programs in more than 50 countries have raised almost $700 million since 1992 for research and advancing access to care, regardless of a person’s ability to pay.
