This story comes to us from Bernie Prince:

In a continuing effort to promote local food resources to D.C. metropolitan area communities of all incomes, FRESHFARM Markets is launching its Matching Dollars Program at the Dupont Circle FRESHFARM Market on June 12, 2011.

Established in 2008 at select FRESHFARM Markets, the Matching Dollar Program (previously called Double Dollars) increases the buying power of shoppers using SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program /Food Stamps), WIC (Women, Infants and Children) and SFMNP (Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program)  coupons at market.  Shoppers using these nutritional benefits at market decide how much they’d like to spend at the market that day, and FRESHFARM Markets matches the amount with up to $10 worth of bonus Matching Dollar tokens.  2011 funding for the FRESHFARM market program is provided by generous donations from The Wholesome Wave Foundation, Marpat Foundation, and individual gifts.

In 2010, FRESHFARM Markets gave away $19,076 in free Matching Dollars to 2,625 low-income shoppers at five FRESHFARM Markets. In 2011, we hope to disperse $30,000 at five FRESHFARM Markets: Silver Spring, H Street NE, Health and Human Services, By the White House, and starting on June 12, Dupont Circle.

“By bringing our Matching Dollars Program to the Dupont Circle market, we hope to encourage more low-income consumers to buy fresh, healthy local food,” said Bernadine Prince, Co-Executive Director of FRESHFARM Markets.  “This incentive program has been very successful at our other FRESHFARM Markets participating in the program and we are anticipating the same success at Dupont.” The FRESHFARM Market at Dupont Circle, located at 20th Street, NW between Massachusetts and Connecticut Avenues, NW started in 1997. It is one of the largest markets in the city averaging from 3,000 to 6,000 customers per Sunday.  With 42 farmers and producers in attendance, the market offers a wide variety of produce, breads, meats, eggs and dairy products.

Dupont Circle is the only farmers market in Washington, D.C. open year-round on Sundays with an incentive program offering bonus dollars to shoppers using SNAP, WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Coupons (SFMNP).
