This story comes to us from Samir Cummings:

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 22, 2011 - The Lifting as We Climb Foundation will host its second annual “Grasping the Dream” fundraising gala, Tuesday May 3rd at the Organization of American States headquarters at 17th and Constitution Ave. in Northwest Washington, DC.

DC natives Vernon Davis of the San Francisco 49ers, Vontae Davis of the Miami Dolphins and NBA broadcaster Phil Chenier will join area athletes to raise funds for youth to attend the ‘Sound Mind, Sound Body’ academy at Howard University. Designed for over 200 young men in the District, these camps motivate and empower youth in academics, athletics and in life building skills.

“We are excited by the support this event has garnered over the years, and the difference the summer clinics have made to these young men,” said Foundation President and Co-Founder Siraaj Hasan.  "While municipal governments cut programs for youth, it’s clinics like ours that ensure our young men know these valuable skills on and off the field, especially during the summer months."

Launched in 2004, the foundation, gala and activities like the academy are sponsored by Booz Allen Hamilton, Nike, U.S Army, the NFL and Under Armour, among others. The festivities include tasting stations from area chefs, a silent auction provided by Chris Doleman Pro Auctions, award recognitions and the presentation of its annual Legacy Award named in honor of the late Dr. Robert Cummings of Howard University.

Attendees will learn more about the difference made in the lives of these young men through these camps that now take place in Washington, Detroit, Chicago, Illinois, Tulsa and set for New York City, Miami, and California in 2012. NBC Washington reporter and DC native Tracee Wilkins will emcee the gala. Proceeds from the evening’s gala will benefit the summer academy, taking place June 23-24 on the campus of Howard University.

The gala begins Tuesday May 3rd at 7 p.m. with entertainment provided in partnership with the Organization of American States, the world’s oldest regional organization.

Individual tickets start at $59 with discounts for couples and corporate donation. For ticket and sponsorship information, go to http://graspingthedream2.eventbrite.com/

“With over 200 attending these camps we are always looking for people to sponsor-a-youth. Many kids need a summer program that focuses on more than just athletics, but most don’t have the funds. We are looking to minimize the expense for these young men and their families.” says Hasan. “We’ve received great corporate support and now we hope the community will come out for an entertaining evening and support this valuable program.”

Established in 2004, The Lifting As We Climb Foundation, Inc. (LAWCF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of underprivileged, low-income youth.
