DC Latino Pride Discusses Marriage Equality, Cultural Performances, HIV Testing & More

This event comes to us from Juan Navarro:

WASHINGTON, DC – The Latino GBLT History Project will celebrate the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Latino community at its Fifth Annual DC Latino Pride celebration on the first floor of Town Danceboutique, 2009 8th St. NW, Washington, D.C. on Friday, June 10 from 6:00 pm to 9:00pm. LGBT Latinas, Latinos and allies in the Washington Metro area will be treated to an incredible evening featuring guest speakers, panelists, a historical exhibit, appetizers, cultural performances, and Town's legendary cash bar.

“We will provide our community a top-notch educational and cultural celebration at the largest and newest LGBT dance club in Washington!” said David M. Pérez, newly elected president of the Latino GLBT History Project and co-chair of the 5th Annual DC Latino Pride.

The panel discussion will focus on the “Inequalities of Marriage Equality”; including a frank discussion on the challenges faced by bi-national LGBT couples. Featured entertainment will include cultural performances by Alondra Sancheez, Afrodita Washington, Ivana Glamour Washington, Khyisha, Diego El Sabroso, and a Latina Fashion Preview from the Natalia Sanz Collection!

“This year we are bringing you a combination of DC’s best drag kings and queens. I’m also excited to hear Benz Marston, a local youth performer, sing.  We will also have a longer networking reception with appetizers donated from local businesses,” said José Ramirez, co-chair of the 5th Annual DC Latino Pride.

Whitman-Walker Health will offer free HIV testing. Gift bags donated by Bloomingdale’s will be filled with fun giveaways and information on health, legal and violence prevention resources from non-profit partners. A raffle will feature gift certificates from Toro Mata, Bloomingdale’s, and El Zol 99.1fm.

In addition, the Latino GLBT History Project will honor José Gutiérrez with the 1st Annual Community Leadership Award named in his honor, recognizing his 11 years of service as founder and president Latino GLBT History Project. The program will also include a presentation of the 2011 Miss Latino GLBT History Project Marilyn Ramos and Mr. Latino GLBT History Project Johnny Vasquez for their dedicated community service.

This annual tradition, anticipated by LGBT Latinas, Latinos, and allies, creates a space to remember Latino LGBT history and celebrate our diverse identities. Portions of the program will be conducted in Spanish and English. 18+ to enter.  A suggested $5 donation benefits the 5th Annual DC Latino Pride celebration and the year-round programs and services of the Latino GLBT History project. With your donation you will be able to stay at Town for the nightclub experience after our event and enjoy the night's headliner: Cazwell, New York City personality, rapper, and guest judge on RuPaul's Drag Race.

This is event is made possible by the generous support of co-presenting sponsors Brother, Help Thyself, Town Danceboutique, El Zol 99.1fm and over 25 local and national sponsors and community partners.
