Report Says Crime on U Street Is Up

The U Street area blog Borderstan is reporting that crime on U Street is up.

Report Says Teenage Crime Way Up In D.C.; Lack Of Youth Programs To Blame?

A few days ago, Scott McCabe of the Washington Examiner published an article reporting that teenage crimes in D.C. are way up thus far this year

"The number of children under 18 arrested and charged with violent crimes -- homicide, rape and aggravated assault -- has risen 10 percent this year compared with last year,"  McCabe wrote.  "Burglary arrests of juveniles jumped 90 percent, while thefts shot up 173 percent."

Fourth DC Youth Who Escaped South Carolina Has Been Captured

Washington, DC -- The DC Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS) announced that a youth under the agency’s supervision who escaped from a South Carolina placement center on April 20th was taken back into custody by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force today without incident.  The task force is made up of several state and local law enforcement agencies, including the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and the United States Marshals Service. 

 

Sunday's Ontario Road NW Homicide Victim Identified As 23 Year-Old

(Washington, DC)-The Metropolitan Police Department has announced that the victim of the homicide which occurred in the 2300 block of Ontario Road, NW has been identified.

On Sunday, April 24, 2011 at approximately 1:55 pm, members of the Third District responded to the 2400 block of 17th Street, NW for a man down. Upon arrival on scene, they discovered an unidentified male in the 2300 block of Ontario Road, NW suffering from trauma.

Personnel from DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and determined the victim had no signs of life. The victim was later pronounced dead by a member of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The decedent has been identified as 23 year-old Santos Jobel Martinez Umansor of NW, Washington, DC. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099 or 1-888-919- CRIME (1-888-919-2746).

Borderstan: U Street Area Crimes Up More Than 35% This March From Last Year

Crimes in and around the U Street Corridor are up 36% this past March compared to March 2010, local blog Borderstan reported this morning.  

According to the Matt Rhoades of Borderstan, who used numbers from the MPD Crime Database, "There were 101 crimes compared to 74 the previous March. PSA 305 covers the U Street NW area as well as the Howard University area to the northeast.  The increase was in both property and violent crimes. There were 26 violent crimes last month, up from 20 in March 2010. The number of property crimes increased from 54 in March 2010 to 75 last month."
