WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- With temperatures rising, it may not come as a surprise to see the cash in your pocket book dropping.

Air conditioner bill goes up.

A constant need to buy bottled water.

And always having to give into the kids- “Mommy, can I have an ice cream?”

We hit the streets to find all things free in the DC area- well maybe just a few summer opportunities here and there. Take a break from the scorching heat, cool down and stay safe with our list of the “Top 3 FREE Things To Do To Beat The Heat:”

Registration is now open for the summer season of DC Bocce!  Bocce is a great recreational sport, that can be easily enjoyed by people of all ages, genders, and skill sets equally.   And the fun doesnt stop on the field, the league has sponsored happy hours at a nearby bar, with food and drink specials, after each match.

DC Bocce is a fun outdoor summer activity. It really is the perfect mix of competition, networking, mingling and partying.

There are locations in Adams Morgan, Ballston, Capitol Hill, Columbia Heights & Dupont Circle.  Games are once a week and run from mid July to early September

From the Town of Leesburg, VA – At 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 12, 2011, Frank Ruggles, formerly  an official photographer with the National Park Service, will be speaking at the Thomas Balch Library.  The lecture is free and open to the public.  The Thomas Balch Library is located at 208 West Market Street in downtown Leesburg.

Frank Ruggles served as an official photographer of the National Park Service from 2007 to 2010.  During his tenure, he visited and photographed over 150 National Parks, Monuments and Forests across the nation.  Frank described his work as a National Park Service photographer as his “dream job,” a position once held by his photographic hero, Ansel Adams.

95-Year-Old Greenspring Resident Prepares to Exhibit Original Artwork in D.C. on May 27

SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA—It’s safe to say that Sidney Foster, 95, had no idea how much his life would change when he attended his first abstract art class at Greenspring retirement community in October 2010.   Now, Foster is preparing for his first professional art show at the Geoffrey Diner Gallery in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C.  Starting May 27, several of Foster’s paintings will be on display and for sale at the gallery.  The exhibit will close on June 25, just a few days after Foster’s 96th birthday.
