This community notice comes to us from the Executive Office of the Mayor:

WASHINGTON -- Mayor Vincent C. Gray is convening a hearing that will give members of the public an opportunity to provide their input on shaping the D.C. Public Schools (DCPS) budget for Fiscal Year 2012 -- a year that will force all D.C. agencies to engage in significant belt-tightening due to a major budget deficit.

Best New Eatery in Dupont Circle

Best New Eatery in Dupont Circle

When it comes to discovering new food joints, social media is a beautiful thing.

It wasn’t until I saw a tweet by @DupontCircleDC did I think to try Food Corner Kabob House, located at 2029 P Street, for lunch.  It’s a good thing I saw it, because Food Corner Kabob is the best new eatery I’ve been to in Dupont Circle.

“Had lunch at new Food Corner Kabob in Dupont Circle (P St between 20+21) and was blown away at how good it was” the tweet read.  Following the statement was the link to Food Corner Kabob’s Yelp page, where it was receiving stellar reviews.

Five out five stars on Yelp is…well…something to yelp about.

SESI Admissions Director Fights Truancy at Students’ Front Doors

This story comes to us from Tony Gallotto:

David Clarke isn’t a cop or a truant officer, but for a few years now he has taken his fight against truancy directly to students’ front doors. Behind those doors, Clarke often finds students and their families in crisis causing unexcused absences.

Clarke, the admissions director for the six D.C. schools operated by Specialized Education Services, Inc. (SESI), said student truancy often has complicated underlying causes. “Most of our students are not skipping school just for the heck of it,” Clarke said.

“I have found some of our kids with no food, no electricity, no heat or hot water. Some were left to babysit younger siblings. Others were afraid to leave home because of neighborhood beefs,” said Clarke. “Some had no clean clothes, no money to do laundry and were embarrassed to come to school because they didn’t feel presentable.”

Candid Cameras Give a Chance to See Wildlife as a Scientist Does

Candid Cameras Give a Chance to See Wildlife as a Scientist Does

This story comes to us from the National Zoo:

Researching animals in the wild can be challenging, especially if it involves a rare or elusive species like the giant panda or the clouded leopard. To remedy this, scientists rely heavily on camera traps—automated cameras with motion sensors.

Left to photograph what passes in front of them, the cameras record the diversity and very often the behavior of animals around the world. The Smithsonian has brought together more than 202,000 wildlife photos from seven projects conducted by Smithsonian researchers and their colleagues into one searchable website at http://siwild.si.edu/.

The new website allows the public to see exactly what scientists see in their research—photos of wildlife captured at close range, from the head-on stare of a jaguar in Peru to inside the mouth of a giant panda in China.

'Cajun' Experience Comes to DC

WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA)-- Angie Goff reports on the VIP opening of The Cajun Experience in Dupont Circle.

DC tastemakers enjoyed authentic cuisine that includes crawfish etouffee and Executive Chef Bryan Crosswhite's famous bread pudding. The chef prides himself  on having no formal culinary experience boasting his menu is solely based off family traditions and passed down recipes.

Crosswhite adds no measuring spoons are used when cooking. He resorts to only 'pinches', 'eye-balling' and using a 'handful.'
