DC Merchant LivingSocial Offering Instant Deals

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The discount deal provider LivingSocial says it's testing a new service that will let Washington customers get instant discounts in addition to the current daily deals.

Washington-based LivingSocial announced the new deal promotion on Monday. The company says that unlike the current daily deals, which arrive to subscribers via e-mail and are available for 24 hours, the instant deals will be available for shorter periods of time and be accessed on a person's mobile device.

The short duration of the deals will allow businesses to offer a discount during a slow lunch or dinner or to bring customers in for a promotion.

The one-month test of the instant deals will focus on Washington hot spots such as Dupont Circle, U Street and Chinatown.

Metro Board Chair Promises Big Improvements in Coming Months

Acknowledging that we are now dealing with what she calls a “changed” Metro, new Metro board chair Catherine Hudgins issued a statement recently outlining WMATA’s goals for the near future. Although not a transit professional herself, Hudgins shared her history of a close relationship with public transit since childhood through her last four decades in the District, where she witnessed the building of the very first Metro rails.

Hudgins echoed recent statements made by new CEO Richard Sarles’ regarding how they plan to turn Metro around. Hudgins states,

Harry Shearer, the actor who voices such beloved Simpsons characters as Montgomery Burns, Ned Flanders, and Otto Mann will be offering a master class Saturday March 12 at the Gala Theater as part of this year's DC Independent Film Festival. Besides lending his vocal chords to half of Springfield, Shearer has a body of work that spans four decades including the cult comedy classic This Is Spinal Tap.

Following the master class, Shearer will screen his documentary The Big Uneasy. In the film, Shearer gets the real story of Hurricane Katrina right from the people who lived through it, revealing an account not heard in the popular media.

Local Women Star in New Television Show Focusing on Style and Lifestyle in DC and Hunt Country

Episode one of Style in the City, a show that's all about styleand lifestylein and around the Nation's Capitol, first aired this week. And if you have access to Fairfax Public Access Chanel 10, it should be easy enough to catch or DVR (since it's showing more than thirty times this month!).

The show's cast comprises Leesburg resident, Leigh Macdonald, DC's Stefanie Ball, and two Middleburg women, Cindy Bapst and Elizabeth Miller. The show's director, Kristin Rustom, resides in both Middleburg and DC. The show focuses on distinctions between the life in the District and life in nearby Hunt Country, and much of the first episode was filmed on location at Delaplane Cellars in Delaplane, VA.
