Opening Doors for High School Girls

According to a report published by the National Center for Women & Information Technology, the number of women holding computer-related jobs peaked at 36% in 1991. It’s been in decline ever since. Considering how technology-dependent our society has become, that spells bad news. It’s especially concerning for an area filled with companies that deliver cutting edge products and services to the Federal government.

So how, then, do we turn this trend around and encourage young women to go into technical fields? Enter the Girls in Technology Mentor-Protégé program.

Girls in Technology helps high school girls develop skills needed to architect an academic and professional future in technology. It’s a volunteer organization that relies on the generosity of corporate sponsorships.

Gift Ideas For Mother's Day

Gift Ideas For Mother's Day

Just as the temperature begins to show signs of heating up, and my flower beds begin to show signs of life beyond winter, I found the most gorgeous collection of silk photo albums that are simply too elegant to forget. And in fact, I was invited to a fabulous black tie event last weekend at my friend, Lynda's home (yes, her home!) and I so wish that I had come across these works of art before I settled on something lovely as a hostess gift-- but not nearly as special.

The Founders' Top 10 List

The Founders' Top 10 List

If you’re searching for angel or venture funds in the Metro DC area, and you missed the Potomac Techwire breakfast roundtable on Tuesday, then you’ll want to take note of what the funders’ panel had to say. Many of the themes investors found most important paralleled the entrepreneurs’ advice.

The funders’ panel recommended that entrepreneurs:

This weekend, find something new to do with WUSA Events!

This weekend, find something new to do with WUSA Events!

Looking for something interesting to do this weekend? Well, look no further than the WUSA Events!

This Saturday has something going on for everyone! In honor of Earth Day check out Green: The Color and The Cause at the Textile Museum to see what is going on with eco friendly materials. Or you can catch a showing of Photograph 51 at the Jewish Community Center, which looks at the life of Rosalind Franklin, one of the great female scientists of the 20th century.

Would You Pay This Much For a Parking Space?

Would You Pay This Much For a Parking Space?

So I saw this flyer pasted all over Adams Morgan.

It is advertising a parking space for rent in Woodley Park/Adams Morgan in an alley between Biltmore and Calvert streets.

The asking price is $200 per month.

We want to know if:

1. You think this asking price is appropriate for a spot in NW DC.

And 2. If you would ever spend that much on a parking spot.

1 of 3 Dupont Circle Metro Escalators Still Out

WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- Wednesday evening, all three escalators went out of service at the 19th Street entrance of the Dupont Circle Metro station. The comb plate on the escalator on the far right broke and crews are trying to fix it.

Metro riders had to walk up and down the escalators.

One rider, Mike Darnier, was out of breath when we caught up with him on Wednesday evening. He described the whole ordeal as "tough" and said that the escalators break down far too often. Darnier, who has ridden Metro for 6 years, said that he thought that the escalator problems were getting worse and that they may be due, in part, to funding issues.

Around 10:30 p.m., authorities told us that two of the escalators were back in service around 9 p.m. but the third one was still not working. The third escalator at that entrance was already undergoing planned maintenance, say Metro authorities.
